TRAVEL VACCINATIONS

We offer a full travel vaccination service including Yellow Fever. We are a National Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre, one of the few in the area.

Ideally you should contact us about 8-12 weeks before your departure in case you need a course of injections. Both of our practice nurses advise and administer the necessary immunisations: make an appointment via reception on 01252 793183. It would be helpful if you told the receptionist where and when you are travelling.

Additional information also available from www.fco.gov.uk and www.travax.nhs.uk

Many vital travel vaccinations are free: for example Typhoid, Hepatitis A and also Tetanus and Polio, if administered by us.

However other, equally vital, immunisations including Yellow Fever, Meningitis and Rabies are not available at NHS expense and must be paid for privately. This is a Department of Health decision.

Likewise anti-malarial tablets are not available on NHS prescription and must be paid for. Malaria still claims many lives every year so please do not chance it! Follow the nurses’ advice as to what sort is best for you and for your destination. Remember to take them as instructed, including during the recommended period after return. Most need to be taken for a month after returning, except for Malarone which is only a week.

It is important not to get bitten: use insect repellent and insect nets and cover up arms, feet and legs at dusk when the mosquitoes are most active.

We accept payment by cash or cheque only.

PNEUMOCOCCAL VACCINATION

Everybody aged 65 and over should be immunised to help protect against pneumococcal infection which can cause diseases such as pneumonia, septicaemia (blood poisoning) and meningitis. It is also called the “pneumonia jab”

Everybody is at risk of getting pneumococcal disease, but the older you are the greater the risk. If you are 65years or over, please call us to arrange a jab if you have not had one. It is free.
