Swine Flu

If you have Flu like symptoms please stay at home and do as you have traditionally done. Only contact the doctor if symptoms are unusually severe or protracted.

If you have any queries please contact NHS Direct by telephone or by their website www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk .

Please do not come to the surgery. If you have any further questions which have not been covered by the NHS direct website then telephone us. If you need to speak to a doctor then please do this by telephone.

The best way to protect yourself from catching flu is to wash your hands frequently. If you have flu like symptoms then always use a tissue if you cough or sneeze – Catch it, Bin it, Kill it and wash your hands.

Prophylaxis and contact tracing

There is no longer the requirement to carry out contact tracing or routinely arrange antiviral treatment as prophylaxis. However, the CMO letter states that doctors can offer prophylaxis to contacts of cases if for example, a household member has serious underlying health problems or there are other special circumstances.

Priority Groups for treatment

Doctors will give priority to early treatment with antivirals for people in the higher risk groups. These are people with

Chronic lung disease
Chronic heart disease
Chronic kidney disease
Chronic liver disease
Chronic neurological disease
Immunosuppression (whether caused by disease or treatment)
Diabetes mellitus

And

Patients who have had drug treatment for their asthma within the past three years
Pregnant women
People aged 65 years and older
Young children under 5 years old.
