What is the Care Quality Commission?
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is the independent regulator of health and social care in England. They make sure that the care provided by health and care services meets government standards of quality and safety.
What are the government standards?
The government standards are a set of guidelines that cover all aspects of care, including treating people with dignity and respect, safety and suitability of premises, cleanliness and infection control, handling complaints etc.
How does the CQC ensure that standards are being met?
The CQC monitors information about services and carries out inspections. Information monitored might include: complaints from service users or their families; information provided to them from care staff; information the service has shared themselves, as well as information provided from other organisations.
What happens if standards aren’t met?
If standards aren’t being met, CQC usually ask for services to deliver an action plan showing how they will work towards meeting the standards they have fallen down on.
They also have the power to:
· Issue fines and warnings
· Restrict the services provided
· Suspend or cancel a services registration
